Step By Step Guide on How to Map

Before mapping…

  1. You have to have a gmail or google account.
    Please sign up by going to
  2. Once you have a gmail account, provide the gmail address to You will then be invited to join each of the seven maps listed in this larger map by a project administrator.
  3. Once you are invited to all of these layers, then you are now also a project administrator and can invite others to participate as well.


  1. Go to
    Click on the Map Links button
  2. Choose a category layer to map your location under.
  3. The layers are currently:
    Art and culture; Built fabric; Environment; Exchange; History; Olympic impacts; Social and civic
  4. Click the category layer [This will take you to the map for that layer.]
  5. On the lefthand side of the page click the Edit button to add a point on the map.
  6. In a separate browser window, look up the address of the site you want to map.
  7. Back in the Maps window, type in the address or intersection.
  8. A Google bubble point will appear at that spot once you have selected it.
  9. On the lefthand side of the page click Save to…choosing which map you want to save your point under. In other words, select from the pull down menu which map layer you want to put the site under.
  10. Hit Save button.
  11. Then select My Maps in the blue menu bar.
  12. Choose the layer for the point you just plotted.
  13. Click the Edit button.
  14. Select the point you plotted.
  15. Edit the Title of the point so that it reads as a snappy headline.
  16. Choose a colour for the balloon that corresponds to the colours already on that map.
  17. Add descriptive text [no longer than 2 sentences], links to articles, photos, etc…
  18. Click save.
  19. Click done.
